Web / FTP Statistics Terminology
- Number of Visits
- The total number of files requested from the server. This counts all files, such as web page files plus graphics on a web page. Thus, if someone visits one web page on your web site which also contains 2 graphics on it, this registers as 3 hits. As you can see, the number of hits to your web site is not always indicative of the number of people visiting your web site.
- Bandwidth
- The amount of information transferred in filling those requests. Sites with lots of graphics or free downloads will show more bytes transferred. Sites with just text on web pages will show less bytes transferred.
- Unique Visitors
- The (approximate) number of actual individual visitors to your web site. This is one of the most meaningful figures generated by the traffic reports. Put simply, this is how many people have visited your web site.
- Pages
- The number of web pages viewed (page views) by your web site visitors. On average, page views are 2 - 5 times higher than visits, meaning the average person visiting a web site visits 2 -5 pages on a site. Site with popular content will have higher page views. Sites that simply try to sell something often show fewer page views.
